Witnesses of Faith: Martyrdom, Memory, and Cinema

Christian martyrdom is first of all an act of witness. Yet the martyr’s death cannot be understood from its final moment alone. Behind it lies a process of spiritual formation, a response to faith and values, and often a life of service and public responsibility.

This Study Day brings together philosophy, theology, history, and cinema to explore martyrdom as Christian witness: how such witness is formed, lived in history, remembered, and transmitted through culture. Beginning with the philosophical and theological meaning of martyrdom, it considers the lives and deaths of Gabriel García Moreno and Blessed Anacleto González Flores before turning to the challenge of representing Christian witness through contemporary cinema.

Particular attention will be given to the relationship between interior formation, public action, freedom, fidelity, and the witness of death, as well as to the responsibility of filmmakers seeking to communicate spiritual realities truthfully to a new generation.
